ABOUT ME

IMG_4284_edited.jpg

As the daughter of a Notre Dame Professor, correct spelling and good grammar were instilled in me from first grade on!  Now, as an avid bookworm and word-nerd, finding spelling errors and incorrect word choices while reading are like fingernails on a chalk board to me  :-)

My entire career has been in the healthcare field, first as a Medical Technologist, then as an information systems leader, and finally as a Director of Imaging Services.  My bachelor's in Medical Technology is from St. Louis University, and my MBA is from Southern New Hampshire University.

These days, I am finally going back to my passion of reading, and consequently proofreading.  In order to enhance the quality of my work, I have recently completed general and advanced coursework at "Proofread Anywhere", and have obtained their certificate.

When not reading, I am an AKC judge of several sporting dog breeds, and a breeder of English Springer Spaniels and Havanese.  I am also an avid gardener in the Summer, specializing in perennial flowers and tropicals.

I would love to copyedit, Beta read or proofread your stories, novels, documents, proposals and medical works.  Please explore my site and reach out to me at 732-580-6032 or my e-mail at libby.naimo@yahoo.com.com to discuss how I can be of service to you.

What's the difference?

Copyediting, Beta reading and Proofreading are distinct processes in the editing workflow, each serving a unique purpose in refining written content.

Definitions and Roles

Copyediting:

  • This process occurs after substantive editing and focuses on improving the clarity, coherence, and overall quality of the text. Copyeditors check for grammatical errors, punctuation, spelling, and style consistency. They also ensure that the content flows well and adheres to the publication's style guide. The goal is to polish the writing while maintaining the author's voice.

Beta Reader:

  • A beta reader is someone who reads a completed or near-completed book manuscript to give the writer feedback before publication, and beta reading refers to this same process. The term comes from the "beta" version of a product in software development that's tested by users before its final release.

  • Betas know their book’s genre well. Though beta readers are not editors or professional critics, they can play an important role in helping the author improve the work by pointing out errors, plot holes, inconsistencies, or unclear passages.

Proofreading:

  • This is the final step in the editing process, performed after copyediting. Proofreaders review the text for any remaining errors, including typos, formatting inconsistencies, and minor grammatical issues. They ensure that the document is ready for publication by checking the layout and design elements, making it the last line of defense against mistakes.

Key Differences

  • Timing: The Beta reader is often the first person to go through the book, document etc. to find any holes or inconsistences in the copy. Copyediting is done before proofreading. It involves a more in-depth review of the content, while proofreading is the last check before publication.

Focus:

  • Copyediting addresses the overall quality of the writing, including structure and clarity, while proofreading focuses on surface errors and formatting.

Scope of Work:

  • Copyeditors may suggest changes to improve readability and coherence, while proofreaders primarily correct errors without altering the content significantly.

Skills Required:

  • Beta readers will do a "first read" and point out errors in the plot line or inconsistencies in flow.

  • Copyeditors need a strong command of language and grammar, as well as an understanding of style guides.

  • Proofreaders should be detail-oriented and able to spot spelling or grammar errors that may have been overlooked during the editing process.

Conclusion:

  • All three types of work, Beta reading, copyediting and proofreading are essential for producing high-quality written work. Understanding the differences between these  processes can help writers and editors ensure that their documents are polished and error-free before publication. For optimal results, it is recommended to have both a copyeditor and a proofreader involved in the editing process.
